Safe To Gather is an information tool, not a food-safety authority.
It never tells you a location is safe to gather from, or that shellfish are safe to eat.
Classification describes commercial controls, not personal permission. Closure notices for
England & Wales are issued by local authorities and are not listed centrally — always confirm
current status with the local authority Environmental Health Officer and follow
Food Standards Agency guidance before gathering. Eating
shellfish from unverified waters can cause serious illness.
We show safety status only, not whether gathering is lawful —
permits, fishery byelaws and foreshore ownership are separate matters, so check those too. The
underlying data is official but may be out of date (official data as of 2026-07-20); we do not warrant it is current or
accurate, so always verify locally before gathering. See our
Terms & disclaimer.
